IKEA Looking at Milwaukee
The Milwaukee Business Journal reported in its May 27, 2005 print edition that IKEA has retained a real estate broker in Milwaukee to find a location for a store. The store would be 215,000 square feet, as compared to the 300,000 square foot store in Schaumburg, Illinois, the closest IKEA store to Milwaukee (and our closest too!). Joan Hocke with IKEA Property says the site could be developed over the next several years.
Sigh. I’m originally from Wisconsin so I know Milwaukee is a great city, but I can’t believe they’re probably going to get an IKEA store before we will.

Our IKEA store in Atlanta just happened to open its doors today. Lines were starting to form at 5 am. I happened to be in the city limits today, and on the two roads leading to the IKEA store they had police roadblocks and cops directing traffic it was so hectic.
The IKEA is the first store to open in the Atlantic Station development here. It will soon be joined by a brand new massive aquarium and a mess of other anchor type retail stores.
I hope to check it out this weekend.

hah, what’s there not to believe? st. louis might have a slightly bigger population and better baseball team, but milwaukee definitely ranks higher on the “cool meter” than st. louis. i think this is the answer as to why milwaukee is getting an ikea sooner than st. louis.
I doubt how “cool” an area is figured very highly in Ikea’s reasons for deciding to put a store in Milwaukee. The number of customers at the Schaumburg store who are from Milwaukee and the surrounding area probably had more to do with it. Either way, I’m happy for Milwaukee.
Ikea is finally going to be set up in Milkwaukee? I can’t wait! I am from the Bay area (currently living in Milwaukee) and got hooked on Ikea when I was out west.
