p. Today is the first day of our vacation at Walt Disney World and we were treated to some early evening fireworks courtesy of NASA. Space Shuttle Atlantis launched this evening at 7:38 pm. A guy was on the phone with someone watching it on TV and gave the word when it cleared the tower. After a few seconds we could see a bright dot heading skyward over Tomorrowland (appropriately enough) with a white trail billowing behind it. An awesome sight even from that far away. Everyone cheered as it faded from view. Very cool.

      p. This is it, the end of TechEd 2007... for me at least. I won't touch on the bag check mess this morning as I covered that in a previous post. I attended two sessions today, both repeats from earlier days. The sessions were:

* SVR315 Server Core: Running a Minimal Server
* CLI311R Building the Perfect Master Image: A Universal Image Strategy

p. Server Core is a welcome addition to Windows Server. I have a few servers back home that are perfect candidates. For systems such as domain controllers, DNs servers, etc., I think you're going to see Server Core become the de facto way to implement these boxes. The lower resource requirements as well as an improved security posture are two factors for this.
p. According to the speaker, most third-party agents such as backup agents work in Server Core today in their shipping versions. I'll be interested to test that out for the agents we're using.

p. The Universal Image session was recommended to me by an individual I ran into from the University, and it was dead-on. With all of the BDD2007 sessions I attended, this was the last component needed to be able to go back and really implement this in our environment. Originally I had put much more emphasis on scripting application installs on top of a few base images, but it is so easy to fall into the trap of building monolithic images, that we wound up doing more of this than we probably should have. Recently I had reduced our image count somewhat and used scripting for installing hardware specific items. But I think it is time to swing the pendulum back even more and see if this will help simplify and streamline how we deploy systems. I have a feeling that some of the glitches we run into are related to building images on top of images as we've been doing.

p. Now I'm off to lunch, and then my vacation begins. I'm relocating over to Disney's Wilderness Lodge. Kristin will fly in later this afternoon and then we begin six days at Walt Disney World! After a week of TechEd, it'll be good to give my brain a rest, turn off email on my phone, and relax a little.

      p. Ran into the first logistics mess of the conference this morning. Like most people, I planned to check out of my hotel this morning and check bags at the convention center for the morning sessions.

p. When I arrived, I found a long line that wasn't moving very fast. Turns out they had one line for airline check-in and one line for regular bag check. That's all they had for everyone checking bags. It took over half an hour to reach the front of the line, and the line behind me had grown to over an hour wait. Would have been much more efficient to use the huge empty space in the registration area and setup a roped off area to place bags instead of hauling them from the line, around the counter, and into a room behind the registration desk.

p. Nearly missed breakfast and my first session. I expect this is a convention center screw-up, but the show organizers need to address this for next year.

      p. Day Four of TechEd. Always a popular day because it means one thing... Attendee Party! No matter the venue or the featured entertainment, everyone seems to enjoy the party. Since we're in Orlando and surrounded by theme parks, no concert this year, instead we all visited Islands of Adventure. Bur first, the day's wrap-up.

p. Today's sessions:

* UNC308 Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Storage and Design Considerations
* MGT306 Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007: Managing Servers
* SVR300R How Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Impacts IT Infrastructure
* MGT320 Microsoft SoftGrid and Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003/System Center Configuration Manager: Better Together

p. I skipped one session period in the afternoon. Had a couple things to take care of for work and the topics didn't really do much for me. Figure I'll check them out on the DVDs when they arrive.

p. The Exchange session was presented by someone from EMC. It started late because he had been told to go to a different room, and it must have been on the other side of the convention center they way he came into the room. Very good coverage of design tools available for Exchange storage systems. A lot of the content wasn't necessarily new, but it was all brought together into one place and will prove useful this summer as part of our deployment prep.

p. The Windows Server 2008 session was one of the best of the conference. I hadn't really done much with Windows Server 2008 at the conference since System Center sessions occupied most of my schedule, but if I only went to one, this was the one to see. So many of the features he covered, from the new Terminal Services features to SMB 2.0 are all gong to be put to good use in our organization. One thing I didn't hear anyone talk about much though was Storage Server. I'm curious whether Server 2008 will be available as a Storage Server upgrade at the same time as general release or whether it will lag somewhat. Since it has to come form the OEMs, I imagine it'll be a little while before we can get our hands on it.

p. The Attendee Party was fun, although it started to rain shortly after we arrived. I managed to ride Dueling Dragons twice before they shutdown the outdoor rides due to a lightning strike in the area. the second run on Dueling Dragons was in the rain, and it stung as we whipped around the track. Between my glasses and the rain, I kept my eyes closed for most of the ride so sitting in the first row really didn't do much for me. Rode Spider-man and then grabbed some food while waiting for rides to restart. While walking back towards Jurassic Park, I noticed that the Dudley Do-Right Ripsaw Falls ride was running again, so hopped in line. I usually don't mind getting wet, but this time I pout my free poncho back on since I was through getting soaked between the storms last night and the rain this evening. Pretty good water ride, and the poncho was a good idea as you get pretty wet at the end. Hit the Jurassic Park water ride which was pretty short, but well done. The T. Rex at the end was especially convincing. They even had performers at the end of the ride portraying John Hammond and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum's character). Very convincing! A little more food, then the Cat in the Hat ride, and that was enough to call it a night.

p. So now I'm packing and doing a little laundry. Need to grab my clothes out of the dryer and get to bed. Two sessions tomorrow morning, then off to Walt Disney World!

p. Oh, almost forgot the day's swag tally. Not much so no picture.

* Source Fource figure: Master Office (my set is complete!)
* Foam yellow school bus (from Neuron, whoever that is) which I found next to one of the CommNet computers

      p. Dean Andrews "posted":http://blogs.technet.com/technetwebcasts/archive/2007/06/06/waitin-for-my-bluecast-to-come-teched.aspx over on the TechNet Webcast Weblog about the Bluecast feature at TechEd and some of the issues they've had. The idea is you set your Bluetooth-enabled phones and other devices to be discoverable, and content will be made available that you can download and use. Some of the stations offered an opportunity to get a free e-book or a video that you can show to get a free t-shirt.

p. I tried and tried and had absolutely no luck. All I managed to do was help run my battery down more than normal. According to Dean, I wasn't alone. Apparently we overwhelmed their systems, so they regrouped and reduced the number of Bluecast locations and beefed up their infrastructure. I didn't have any more luck yesterday but didn't try today. I'll give it one more try tomorrow, and if I still don't get anything, then I give up. My PPC-6700 must be one of the devices they mentioned that have beenbdisabled by the manufacturers from receiving Bluetooth published content.

      p. On day three, I attended the following sessions:

* CLI418 Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007: Advanced Zero Touch Installation with Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 (whew, that's a long title!)
* MGT234 Deploying Microsoft Windows Update Services 3.0
* CLI305 Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack: Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (DaRT) and Asset Inventory Services (AIS) (title corrected from what was listed in the program)
* UNC307 Microsoft Exchange Server 2007: Tips and Tricks

p. UNC307 was a disappointment. the session was very short, only 30-45 minutes, and the content was more like a 200-level session than 300-level. Most of the tips were fairly standard and in some cases not really tips. Knowing that you can use /fp instead of /forestprep isn't much a tip or track in my opinion. Plus the speaker never engaged the audience. Delivery was very plodding and in a monotone. Reading the slide deck for this presentation is a perfectly adequate substitute for having been there in person. Saving grace was I left right afterwards to head back to the hotel and get some rest, so finishing early wasn't so bad. There were no sessions at 5:30 that interested me, so I had a couple hours to nap.

p. The DaRT session was OK. We have been using the Administrator Toolkit from Winternals for some time, so there wasn't much there that was new. The other two components look to be useful, but nothing earth-shattering.

p. The other sessions were excellent, especially the BDD 2007 session. This was a follow-on to the session the day before that introduced BDD 2007 LTI and ZTI. I definitely plan to make use of this when I get back to the office to use as our reference build as well as possibly using for deployment in conjunction with SMS 2003 OSD and WDS.

p. For the evening, I wasn't able to get an invite to the Influencer Party, so I was on my own for dinner. Turned out to be quite an odyssey. First, the weather hear turned in the afternoon, with thunderstorms moving into the area resulting in loud thunder and pouring rain. Looked like a monsoon at times. One especially loud thunderclap came at a perfect time in the demo, such that you'd almost think the gods were weighing in on what they thought about the Desktop Optimization Pack.

p. I expected the rain to move through as it usually does in Orlando, but it kept raining and raining and raining. I took the bus to the convention center, then hopped on the I-drive trolley to head up to a Mexican restaurant hat had ranked highly in area polls. Unfortunately the traffic was horrible and we crawled the whole way there. When I finally arrived at the stop for the restaurant, it was nowhere to be found. I guess it either didn't last or it was well-hidden. So I walked back, not wanting to site in traffic to another restaurant on my list. The rain was light at this point, but still enough to need the umbrella. Turned out the wait was 45 minutes at the next restaurant so I kept walking and finally wound up at Don Pablo's, a chain restaurant, but good enough to satisfy my taste for Mexican food. The rain had really picked up, so by the time I sat down I was soaked. Must have looked like a drowned rat. The food was good, though, and I dried off a little while I ate. By the time I left, the rain had tapered off, and I managed to catch the trolley within a couple minutes. So my luck finally turned; better late than never.

p. Swag tally for day 3:

p=. !http://images24.fotki.com/v863/photos/2/247084/914007/009-vi.jpg (Day 3 Swag)!

p. Quick note on the "Source Fource":http://msdn.microsoft.com/events/hero/ characters. First, the spelling is correct. The name is Source Fource, not Source Force as I had been using previously. They added three new characters this year, ISV Super Gal, Windows Vista Sensei, and Master Office. they gave out Windows Vista Sensei today and Master Office will be tomorrow. ISV Super Gal was supposed to be distributed on Friday, but someone had staff walk around and hand them out during the reception at the Partner Expo on Monday Night. Oops! Luckily I managed to snag one that evening. Would have been ticked to have missed completing the collection to go with last year's characters.

      p. Day two was a long day. Sessions all day and a fairly late and long dinner. Have to get to sleep earlier tonight, especially with the night at Islands of Adventure tomorrow.

p. Yesterday's focus was mostly Systems Management Server v4.... I mean System Center Configuration Manager 2007. If there was a sure thing at any SCCM session, it was that everyone keeps calling it SMS v4. I understand the idea behind the System Center family brand, but it will be a long time before people get used to calling SMS by its new name.

p.  Tuesday's sessions were:

* MGT305 Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007: What's New in Software Distribution
* MBL11-TLC Top 10 features in Microsoft Windows Mobile 6
* MGT3130 Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007: Deployment
* MGT307 Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007: Deploying Software Updates
* CLI334 Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007: Microsoft Windows Vista Deployment Walkthrough

p. All of the SCCM sessions were good, all thorough in-depth looks at getting SCCM installed, deployed to clients, and installing software. The addition of Wake On LAN (WOL) functionality alone will be worth the upgrade. The integration of WSUS into SCCM for deploying patches and updates is a welcome move as well. It should make for a more consistent approach to patching and make it easier to manage. We're still on WSUS v2 in our environment, but plan on moving to v3 when I get back.

p. Another new feature we plan to make extensive use of is the ability of SCCM to manage Internet clients. We have manay systems that rarely connect to our network, both home systems provided by the school as well as laptops that never come back to the office. Most people don't have need to use the VPN on a daily basis, so the opportunity to communicate with these systems that would be available with the VPN rarely happens. Unfortunately to manage Internet clients, SCCM has to run in native mode, and to use native mode, I found out today, you need PKI. I've avoided setting up a PKI solution internally, but looks like I have to now. Wish Microsoft had provided some other option to get around deploying PKI. Add that to the to-do list.

p. The Windows Mobile 6 session was a bit of a disappointment. It started late, ended early, and they didn't go over that many features. Unfortunately, I skipped a session about developing a universal image for loading systems that everyone raved about to attend the WM6 session. They are going to offer it again on Friday morning, so I'll be able to catch it then.

p. Had a bit of a scare after lunch. I walked into one of the bathrooms on the main floor and after taking a couple steps into the room, I slipped on a water-covered floor and wound flat on my back. Ouch! That tile is hard, and I'm still a bit sore. Nothing permanently damaged though that I can tell. I'm thankful I didn't smack my head on the floor because if I had, I'd have been on my way to the hospital for sure. Afterwards I noticed the big blue signs at the entrance of the bathrooms that warns the floors are slippery. I'd rather they took the money they spent for the signs and used it to keep the floors dry or use a different floor surface that isn't like ice when it gets wet.

p. Yesterday I ran into a couple guys from the medical school at the University, so I joined them for dinner last night. We ate at Charley's Steak House which was a great meal, althoguh a bit pricey. I need to check the travel guidelines, but I think we exceeded the limits by just a tad. If you're looking for a good steak in Orlando, give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.

p. Swag levels are falling, simply because I've grabbed most of what I'm going to get this trip. Here's the list for the day:

* Source Force figure: Virtual Labs
* Dr. Scripto's Fun Book and Crayons
* Two autographed books for a co-worker: +Writing Secure Code for Windows Vista+ and +The Security Development Lifecycle+

      p. Sigh... Always click save periodically when you're writing really long posts. I just spent half an hour writing today's wrap-up when IE crashed on me and I lost everything. Makes me want to scream. Let's try this again...

p. The morning keynote was so-so. The intro was funny with Christopher Lloyd appearing as Doc Brown from the Back to the Future movies. The demos were also effective. The middle was weak, however, as someone from Gartner went on and on at a level way higher than was appropriate for an audience of IT Pros and Developers (in my opinion). If I wanted to hear someone from Gartner-speak, I'd go to their conferences. The keynote ran long so I wound up leaving before the end so that I could make it over to the south concourse for the morning sessions. Keynotes always run long, and this one was no exception. Tighten things up next year Microsoft.

p. The instructor-led labs were all full, so I went to the hands on lab area and worked on a couple of Vista deployment labs. The new dual-monitor setup was a big improvement over last year; no more binders of lab manuals! Plus you can email the lab manual to your email back home right form the lab. You can also save your lab and resume later.

p. Lunch was pretty good today: chicken and pot roast. The entrance area is a bit of a bottleneck though as people stop at closer buffet lines, leaving the lines at the end wanting for people. Keep moving people! The food is the same no matter where you go.

p. After lunch, I made a few passes through the Partner Expo, then headed to my first session, +SEC306 A Technical Overview of Microsoft Forefront Client Security+. This session was a good overview of FCS and how it works. We're planning to switch our systems from Symantec AntiVirus over to FCS. SAV has been a good product, but the management side hasn't improved in several years. FCS puts it to shame. Plus our pricing under Campus Agreement makes it a no-brainer compared to what we would have to pay this year for SAV.

p. Next was +CLI332 Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack: Microsoft SoftGrid Application Virtualization+. Whew, that's a mouthful. Best session so far. Chad Jones (I think that was his name) had the dual advantage of being able to give a good presentation and having a great product to discuss. The room was packed and people seemed pretty jazzed about SoftGrid. I hadn't really planned on doing much with it even though we get it as part of the Desktop Optimization Pack, but as I've learned more including at today's session, I'm pretty psyched about how this can really help us in our environment. Definitely moved to the top of my "want to do" list for when I get back home.

p. The last session of the day was +SEC324 Setup and Deployment of Microsoft Forefront Client Security+. Some overlap with the earlier session, but more focused on deployment (of course). We only have 550 or so computers, so we should be able to get by with a single server setup or as they call it, a "tiny" installation.

p. At 6 PM, the learning area closed and everyone headed over to the Partner Expo for the reception. Free food and beer and swap is a deadly combination. The food was OK. Finger food and not the healthiest, but chicken tenders, crab cakes, and various other items were enough to be dinner. they even had small hamburgers labeled as "White Castles" but these definitely weren't authentic sliders. Fo one thing the patties weren't square, didn't have holes, and didn't taste like White Castles. But I give them points for trying.

p. Picked up a fair amount of swag, so here's the swag tally for the day along with a photo to close things out for the day:

* Namescape polo shirt (not std swag, we're a customer)
* HP t-shirt
* VMware t-shirt

      p. Keynote intro has Back to the Future theme complete with Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown and the Delorean. Nice tie-in to Universal. Probably the funniest keynote theme yet.

p. They just started a video highlighting a customer success story with Energizer, a St. Louis company. Just showed the Arch onscreen.

      p. I'm sitting in the keynote hall waiting for it to start. They seated us way over on the right side and close to the front. Can barely see the podium from this angle. Oh well, everything to see is up on the big screens anyway.

p. They have us over at the west concourse for this session then back on the bus back to the south building afterwards. As an incentive for people to go to the keynote, breakfast was here as well. Wonder if that was the reason for using west or whether it just worked out that way.

p. Tried downloading the Julian conference tool to my phone but the download links don't work. Grrr.

p. While marking up my pocket guide for my schedule, I wound up deciding not to attend any of the three sessions I had marked and instead will try for one of a couple instructor led labs. Too much content to choose from!

      p. With last year's Sunday night keynote but a distant memory, TechEd returned to Sunday being solely for registration and pre-conference sessions. I'm guessing last year's experiment didn't go over too well. Good to see that they kept the single keynote session though.

p. After waiting for luggage and then the shuttle to my hotel, I didn't get checked in until almost 4 PM. I'm staying at the Residence Inn at Sea World, and so far I'm very pleased with the accommodations. We're close to the Convention Center and International Drive so that's convenient. Plus the room is huge. I should say suite, not room. My suite has two bedrooms and bathrooms, so I have sleeping accommodations for four to six all to myself. Since I'm here for a week, it is a bonus to have all this space.

p=. ! http://images24.fotki.com/v862/photos/2/247084/914007/001-vi.jpg (Orange County Convention Center)!

p. Registration for the conference went smoothly. Not many people at the convention center. That will change tomorrow. The bag this year is a big improvement over last year. Much bigger and with all the necessary compartments present. I still can't believe they left off the water bottle holder last year. It isn't particularly attractive as bags go, but it should get me through the week. I don't understand the compartment for a CD player though. Considering the shift to MP3 players, you'd think the pocket would be Zune-shaped (and why not toss in a Zune while you're at it Microsoft?).

p. The TechEd Store was open so I did some browsing. They hype the fact that books are 20% off. I did some quick checking and of all the books I checked, the discount at Amazon was closer to 30%. I found a couple books that look worthwhile, but I think I'll order them from Amazon. I did grab a couple Microsoft shirts for myself. In previous years many of the items sell out, so if I find a shirt I really like, I don't wait for any end-of-show sales anymore. Unfortunately their Internet connection dropped as I reached the line, so I left my items in a bag behind the counter and will pay on Monday.

p. I stopped by the CommNet and checked out the conference site. I completed the pre-conference survey, and as usual there was a question about preferences for sites for future conferences. The two cities listed were Chicago and Houston. Chicago is a great city with a lot of things to do, but I voted for Houston. Living in St. Louis and growing up in Kenosha, going to Chicago doesn't feel much like going out of town compared to other cities. I haven't been to Houston since I left Exxon, and I have several friends and former coworkers who live there, so I'd rather go there. We know we're in Orlando again next year, so guess we may have some place new for 2009.

p. Ate dinner at a Mexican restaurant at Pointe Orlando. Not bad, although I hate having to pay for chips and salsa. Complimentary chips and salsa should be a requirement to call yourself a Mexican restaurant. Afterwards I headed to Glo Lounge for the "Party with Palermo":http://partywith.palermo.cc. Picked up a free shirt as well as some other trinkets. Then a detour to Walgreens for some sodas for the fridge and hand sanitizer (who knows what you can pick up from those public keyboards with all of the thousands of people here). I usually pick up some bug when I go to TechEd it seems, so figure I can't be too careful.

p. I'll be posting photos from time to time at my "TechEd 2007 album":http://public.fotki.com/ladewig/teched/teched-2007-orlando/.

p. Swag Tally for Day 0:

* Infragistics T-Shirt
* PreEmptive Solutions blinking pin
* Pink Flamingo blinking pin (from Birds of a Feather folks)
* TechEd 2007 Alumni baseball cap
* Microsoft Office 2007 T-Shirt

      p. I'm sitting at the gate in STL waiting for my flight to Orlando and TechEd. Hard to believe it is already June and time for the annual week of all things Microsoft. Between rushing to get our budget nailed down at work, annual reviews, and prepping for TechEd, I'm severely sleep deprived. Planning to catch up this week to make sure I don't get sick.

p. On Friday Kristin is flying down and we're going to vacation at Disney World. Staying at Wilderness Lodge so we're looking forward to that, having never stayed in the Magic Kingdom resort area before.

p. As I look around the seating area, I see a lot of 20-30 year old guys with laptops and no kids with them, so I'm guessing we're all going to TechEd.

      p. Wow are things dusty here on the blog after taking a couple weeks off from posting.

p. Hard to believe we're already halfway through May. Commencement at WashU is this Friday. I leave for TechEd in 18 days. I'm trying to finish putting together my budget for FY2008. Add writing annual reviews for my team, and that's a lot of stuff going on in a very short period of time. Too many things I want to do or need to do and not enough time to do it all.

p. Of course if that is the case, then what am I doing spending time on this post? Good question.

      p. I emailed the MT-Twitter plug-in author and there aren't any plans to provide a digest capability, so I've disabled the plug-in. There is a similar plug-in for WordPress that appears to do everything I want it to do, so I may use this as an excuse to move the blog over to WordPress from MT.
