I’m heading up to Green Bay with my dad in a couple weeks for the first Packers Fan Fest. On the way there and back, I’m going to stop at a couple cemeteries to do some genealogy research. It wouldn’t be a road trip without a cemetery visit.

One cemetery is Lincoln Memorial Cemetery (formerly Wanderer’s Rest) in Milwaukee. My great-granduncle, Emil Ladewig, was buried there in 1911 after succumbing to typhoid fever. I’ve been to the cemetery before, but was not able to locate the grave, so this time I planned ahead and sent an inquiry to the cemetery.

Within a few days I received a response which included a map of the cemetery and approximate locations for Emil as well as his mother-in-law, Lena Hopp Kunkel, along with detailed info on the plot locations. It turns out I probably walked right past his grave on my previous visits without noticing… because he doesn’t have a marker!

It is sad to think of all the graves that have been forgotten over time, those that no one ever visits. But for those graves, there is at least a marker to tell people who is buried there, so that eventually someone may rediscover that person. But to have a grave that doesn’t even have a marker… that is especially sad. Maybe someday we can get get enough family members to chip in and place a marker at the site.

Now I’ve seen it all. Someone has an eBay auction (for a starting bid of $49,000 no less) for the publishing rights to what they claim is a report showing family ties between Jesus (as in the Christ) and various people. But wait, there’s more! You even get the domain name http://jesuskin.com! What a deal!

These folks even point out that the bible documents Jesus’ link to Adam & Eve through Joseph. So people will be flooding you with orders to buy this valuable genealogical research tool once they find that out! Of course, if someone accepts as factual the story of Adam & Eve, wouldn’t they believe we are all related to Adam & Eve anyway? If someone really included Adam & Eve in their family tree, I doubt they’re all that hung up on little things like documentation and proof.

I think I’ll save my $49,000 and wait until some more swizzle sticks from Disneyland’s Club 33 show up on eBay.

I’m back from a week of vacation and genealogy. I drove up to Wisconsin last week to do some genealogy research that just can’t be done at home. The Internet and interlibrary loan are great tools, but for this trip I had to head home. Kristin didn’t have any free vacation days so this was a solo trip.

I spent a couple days at the Wisconsin Historical Society library and archive in Madison and at the Area Research Center at UW Parkside in Kenosha.

The trip was a great break from work, a chance to head home again, and a mother lode of good info. For example, I now have a copy of my 3rd-greatgrandfather’s (Carl Ploenske) estate file including thirty pages of testimony by several members of the family back in 1916. I also have copies of immigration paperwork for two great-grandfathers on my mom’s side, John Luba (from Poland/Russia) and Frank Leskovec (from Slovenia/Austria).
