Our Disney World trip to celebrate my birthday started yesterday. We flew Southwest to Orlando (to heck with American and their bag fees and exorbitant charges to make changes to reservations) and arrived a bit ahead of schedule. A good omen perhaps?

We made our way down to the Magical Express area only to find the longest line I’ve ever seen for ME. We were a bit concerned but the line moved pretty fast, so while it took longer than we had anticipated, it really wasn’t long until we were on the bus.

We arrived at All Star Sports (Not our preferred level of resort, but we wanted to minimize the costs for the trip… we miss you Wilderness Lodge!) and put the new online check-in to the test. The idea is you provide all your info ahead of time and check-in by showing photo ID and picking up your pre-printed materials. Honestly I’m not sure we saved all that much time. Perhaps if the lines had been longer for regular check-in, the advantages may have been more apparent. Would definitely do it again however.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that we were in Surf’s Up building 1. Nice and close to the pool and main building but with a room facing away from the noise around the pool. We settled in, changed into warm-weather clothes, and headed for the bus to Downtown Disney. We were easing into things with a park-free day. After arriving at Downtown Disney we spent the rest of the day shopping and eating.

Lunch was at Earl of Sandwich (love their bread), and dinner was at Cooke’s of Dublin (fish and chips!). We’re on the Disney Dining Plan this trip. Used to be a better deal when the tip and appetizer were included for table service meals, but you can’t beat the free dining promotion. Our only complaint was the inclusion of a dessert item with every quick meal. It is OK if the venue has a fruit option, but not ever one does.

We also did some shopping though not as much as in previous years. Nothing was all that compelling. We were disappointed that we couldn’t find a Chipbacca or Mashter Yoda Star Wars Potato Heads. Will check Hollywood Studios and keep our fingers crossed. We had our real dessert at Ghirardelli. As usual there were way too many people there for their seating area. It doesn’t help when people hold a table waiting for the rest of their party to arrive. Wish the staff would police the area and reserve seating for people who have ordered.

We also took the boat up to Port Orleans Riverside (aka Dixie Landings). We honeymooned at Dixie Landings and it remains a favorite of ours. We checked out the Christmas tree in the lobby then boarded the boat back to Downtown Disney. During the trip we had a good look at the reconstructed treehouse villas. Very nice. Curious how many points these go for.

Walt Disney World announced that they will shutdown the remaining nightclubs at Pleasure Island after September 27. Pleasure Island is to be “reimagined” to appeal to a broader audience. See the Orlando Sentinel article for more details.

Other than walking through Pleasure Island to move between the West Side and the Marketplace, we never did anything there. I’m not one to go to a nightclub or dancing, so there wasn’t much there for me. I did always want to go to the Adventurer’s Club though since it sounded like a fun “Disney” experience, but I guess that isn’t in the cards. Would have stopped by in April if I had known what was coming.

Oops! MiceAge is reporting about major problems with the new Disneyland monorail car. Apparently the blueprints from the 1980s didn’t include changes made to the cars before they went into service. The result? A monorail that caused major damage to itself as it tried to navigate a gentle S-curve.

I can understand why people assumed that the blueprints were correct and didn’t check them against the actual cars. I am surprised, however, that no one did any simulations of the cars as designed on a model of the track. These days it would be a simple matter for the designers to check clearances this way.

I’m so far behind in posting photos from our various trips, so I figured I need to at least post the pictures from our Walt Disney World trip last month. We were there June 8-13, staying at Wilderness Lodge, our new favorite resort. Although Yacht and Beach Club still have the most convenient location, Wilderness Lodge (WL) has incredible theming as well as a great location. From the minute you set foot in the lobby, you may as well be in the Pacific Northwest. The pool area is one of the best at WDW with a mountain stream flowing directly into the pool. And you can hop a boat or take a nature hike over to Fort Wilderness (we didn’t try the trails, but hope to do that next time), or take the boat over to the Magic Kingdom and Contemporary Resort. One night we had dinner at Citricos at the Grand Floridian and took the boat from WL to Magic Kingdom (MK), then switched to another boat to the Grand Floridian (GF), then headed back after dinner via monorail to the Contemporary, then boat again to WL. We hit all of the major parks, watched the space shuttle liftoff (as mentioned in a previous post), and were filmed in a crowd for an upcoming Wonderful World of Disney episode. A great vacation as always!

I have pictures uploaded from the first three days, coverin the Magic Kingdom and Star Wars Weekends at Disney-MGM Studios. The space shuttle photos are there as well. Here are a few pictures to whet your appetite. Head over to my Walt Disney World 2007 gallery for more.

Disney and Pixar are expected to announce a major deal soon. I think the best option for both companies would be for Disney to acquire Pixar and put Steve Jobs (a major Disney shareholder after the acquisition) on the board. Put John Lasseter in charge of all Disney animation, including the new Pixar division, and you’d have a win-win for everyone.

Pixar brings Disney a steady new stream of successful movies and characters. Disney brings Pixar the marketing muscle and outlets to extend those stories and characters into so many areas, such as the theme parks for example. Without that, Pixar just makes movies. One of these days Pixar is going to release a so-so movie, so it is better to make a deal now when they’re batting a thousand.

If Jobs really wanted to find a new partner, he would have done so by now. The fact that he waited until Eisner was gone, made it clear that he wanted to be in business with Disney… just not with Michael.

No, he didn’t bury it in Eisner’s back. On Friday, Roy Disney and Stan Gold came to an agreement with the Walt Disney Company to settle their dispute. According to the agreement, announced in a joint statement, Roy and Stan agree not to run a slate of directors or submit shareholder resolutions for at least five years. They also dismissed their lawsuit against the company. In return Roy is back on the board as Director Emeritus and a consultant. The role is largely ceremonial since he can’t vote on anything, but at least he has a seat at the table.

About time! With Eisner on his way out and Iger making an effort (so it seems) to correct some of the problems that had developed under Eisner, Roy and Stan’s dispute had become counter-productive. This agreement is a way for both sides to save face and for Roy to rejoin the company.

I’ve always dreamed of being a member of Club 33 at Disneyland. Several months ago I sent away for information about membership. Yesterday an envelope arrived with “Club 33” in the return address area. Inside was a letter advising me that the membership is currently full, but if I like, I can be added to the waiting list.

Unfortunately, individual membership is $7,500 with annual dues of $3,025. I knew it would be expensive, but unfortunately that is a bit beyond my means at the time.

Who knows, maybe one of these days I’ll win PowerBall.
